SIMALA SHRINE

Simala Shrine is one of the well-known religious place in the Philippines where thousands of devotees visit the shrine every week which located on Lindogon, Sibonga, Cebu. Simala is a place for people who believes in miracles. This place has been known to be miraculous. The Monastery of the Holy Eucharist is a church in Sibonga for the Marian devotees. The church is very popular among believers not only because it is considered the home of the image of the miraculous Virgin but also because the place is truly amazing and spectacular. The Monastery is the place where the ‘Mga Monghe ni Maria’ [Monks of Mary] lives. Pilgrimages or visiting religious places is one of the most important aspects that most Filipino Catholics have. This aspect keeps their faith alive and keeps them going despite all the challenges in life. Aside from the beautiful structures, spacious and green environment, you’ll find various religious things inside and outside the church.

For example, you can see a huge statue of Virgin Mary (or the “Mama Maria sa Lindogon” or Birhen sa Himala), sculptures or statues of various saints, various images and statues of the Virgin Mary from various cultural backgrounds, such as the Virgin of Guadalupe or the Virgin wearing a kimono.

Second, you can see a replica of the Nazareth Well where people throw in coins while wishing for something silently in their hearts. Surely, wishing wells are something influenced or brought by European culture but has been adopted by other cultures including Filipino.

The sculptures and architecture inside Simala Shrine Church are also the most interesting things you can find and enjoy with, aside from praying and showing devotion to the Virgin. Certainly, paintings on the ceilings, just like some of those you can find at Sistine Chapel in Rome, are quite conspicuous especially if you have that artistic taste for icons and religious symbols.

10000 ROSES CAFE

The 10,000 Roses Cafe is a tourist attraction and cafe located in Cordova, Cebu that has grown popular in recent years. Roughly taking an hour to get from Cebu City, it features two patches of artificial LED roses that light up from dusk till night. Most visitors go for the “instragrammable” appeal to it. The rose area along with the cafe has an entrance fee of P20.00, which is easily affordable. If you went out of your way to Cordova then I don’t think you would mind spending P20. However if anyone with you is either 60 years old and above or 6 years old and below then entrance is free for them. Contrary to what you might think, night time is the prettiest time for the roses but the worst time for photos. This is because there really isn’t any other light source around. So when you try and take photos you’d either be a pitch black figure or be forced to use flash. Try to go around dusk so you have enough light for great photos, and still have the lighted roses surrounding you.

SIRAO GARDEN

In Cebu, Philippines, a so-called “Mini Amsterdam” is attracting tourists from all over the country and even foreigners. It is the famous “Sirao Flower Farm” located in a mountain barangay just few minutes from JY, Lahug, Cebu City. It all started when a couple planted flowering plants to be harvested and sold on All Soul’s Day. They then noticed that their garden is attracting visitors so they decided not to cut them at all. The incursion of tourists encouraged them to plant more. The more plants and flowers in the garden meant more visitors too. Since tulips and hyacinths are hard to grow in a hot climate, celosia flowers are grown in Sirao Flower Farm instead. These flowers are as colorful and attractive as the tulips. Celosia is the main flower grown in Sirao Flower Farm. This flower is considered to be a genus of edible and ornamental plants of the Amaranth family, Amaranthaceae. Its name was derived from the Ancient Greek word “kḗleos” which means “burning” and it refers to its flame-like flower heads. Aside from Celosias, other variety of flowers are grown in the farm. Flowers like sunflower, chrysanthemum, daisy and aster are among the flowers that are planted there. These flowers provide a perfect edge for picture taking.

With summer fast approaching, people are starting to look for places where they can rest and relax away from the city. But not all can afford to leave the city due to some professional commitments. Due to this, they look for a place close or within the city where they can take a dip or simply rejuvenate themselves without having to travel far. One of these places is Cebu Westown Lagoon. Cebu Westown Lagoon is a resort located in Metro Cebu. The resort features manmade lagoons and Jacuzzis where guests can soak away the stress they feel after a week at work. Since it is situated close to the boundary between Cebu City and Mandaue City, the resort is perfect for people who want to take a break over the weekend without having to travel far from the city.
